Species coexistence in resource‐limited patterned ecosystems is facilitated by the interplay of spatial self‐organisation and intraspecific competition

چکیده

The exploration of mechanisms that enable species coexistence under competition for a sole limiting resource is widespread across ecology. Two examples such facilitative processes are intraspecific and spatial self-organisation. These determine the outcome competitive dynamics in many resource-limited patterned ecosystems, classical which include dryland vegetation patterns, intertidal mussel beds subalpine ribbon forests. Previous theoretical investigations have explained within ecosystems by making strong assumptions on differences between (e.g. contrasting dispersal behaviours or different functional responses to availability). In this paper, I show interplay detrimental effects nature self-organisation forms mechanism does not rely species-specific captures wide range environmental stress gradient. use model interactions two generic consumer with an explicitly modelled relies balance species' colonisation abilities their local competitiveness, provided sufficiently strong. Crucially, requirements self-limitation occur differ opposite ends input spectrum. For low levels, facilitated superior its abilities, but larger volumes input, locally enables coexistence. Results presented paper also highlight importance hysteresis understanding tipping points, particular extinction events. Resource competition and coexistence in heterogeneous metacommunities: many-species coexistence is unlikely to be facilitated by spatial variation in resources

There is little debate about the potential of environmental heterogeneity to facilitate species diversity. However, attempts to show the relationship between spatial heterogeneity and diversity empirically have given mixed results. One reason for this may be the failure to consider how species respond to the factor in the environment that varies. Most models of the heterogeneity-diversity relat...

Role of intraspecific competition in the coexistence of mobile populations in spatially extended ecosystems.

Evolutionary-game based models of nonhierarchical, cyclically competing populations have become paradigmatic for addressing the fundamental problem of species coexistence in spatially extended ecosystems. We study the role of intraspecific competition in the coexistence and find that the competition can strongly promote the coexistence for high individual mobility in the sense that stable coexi...

Intraspecific variation and species coexistence.

We use a two-species model of plant competition to explore the effect of intraspecific variation on community dynamics. The competitive ability ("performance") of each individual is assigned by an independent random draw from a species-specific probability distribution. If the density of individuals competing for open space is high (e.g., because fecundity is high), species with high maximum (o...

Spatial interplay of plant competition and consumer foraging mediate plant coexistence and drive the invasion ratchet.

Indirect effects may play an important role in structuring plant communities. Using a spatially explicit model of consumer foraging and plant competition, we demonstrate how the relationship between the spatial area over which plants compete and the spatial scale of consumer behaviour can determine the outcome of competition when one plant species provides a refuge for mobile consumers (i.e. re...
